Medical Aid for Oil Spill Victims

Medicines for the Amazon's Wellness and Dignity

Oil pollution in the Ecuadorian Amazon has left an everlasting mark on its inhabitants. Every day, people of all ages struggle with severe conditions related to oil activity, and face an odyssey trying to obtain the necessary treatments. The lack of medicines and government inaction only worsens this crisis.

With your help, we will raise €10,000 to provide the medicines these communities need to alleviate their suffering.

The oil contamination in the Ecuadorian Amazon caused by Chevron has inflicted a deep wound on indigenous communities: environmental devastation, cancer, birth defects, and respiratory diseases. Many cannot alleviate the suffering of their loved ones because medications and treatments are out of reach. The lack of access to basic health services and essential medicines, coupled with impunity and government inaction, exacerbates their situation.

In the Amazon, a deadly cancer epidemic is the leading disease associated with the pollution generated by oil extraction processes.

The poisoned Amazon

In the Ecuadorian Amazon, in just four cantons of the Sucumbíos and Orellana provinces, there are at least 531 diagnosed cases of cancer. The primary cause of this catastrophic disease is the pollution caused by the oil activities of transnational companies and the state-owned company Petroecuador.

The Amazon Resists

UDAPT

The Organized Indigenous Resistance

A key milestone in the struggle of affected communities has been the creation of UDAPT, the Union of People Affected by the Petroleum Operations of Texaco, to demand justice for the damage inflicted on the Amazon by the oil company. For over 30 years, UDAPT has played a crucial role in gathering and disseminating evidence of the devastating pollution caused in the Ecuadorian Amazon, as well as organizing and executing actions for socio-environmental justice.

At APY, we will continue to support UDAPT in their fight for socio-environmental justice, as unfortunately, many affected people cannot alleviate the suffering of their loved ones because medications and treatments are out of reach.
